I knew Charlie Mcmahon a long time ago when I was a lot younger. To this day I still miss him. He was a great person and I still hold on to a lot of the values that I learned from him and his family. It was painful to visit
this site but also good for the soul. They say that "good die young" and that is the only sense that I have ever made out of his death.

Comments: I am a former network news reporter (CBS News at the time) who was evacuated by USAF CH53 from the MACV/DAO compound at Tan Son Nhut at 17:30 hours, 29 April 1975. As you well know, Marines secured the compound as the NVA advanced on Ton Son Nhut from the north west. The buses that carried me and other journalists from downtown Saigon at mid-afternoon on that fateful day entered the compound through the gate guarded earlier by Cpl Charles McMahon, USMC, and LCpl Darwin Judge. Jr.,USMC. We passed over the spot where they were hit. At the precise moment our buses entered the compound two 122mm rockets landed whump! whump! just across the street in the Air America compound. Fortunately, no one was hit, but it was a few tense hours until we boarded the CH-53's. On that day, I had been in Viet Nam nearly four years, always as a reporter, although I had served earlier in the US Army in Germany. I was married to a Vietnamese woman, who had been evacuated to Guam two weeks earlier with her two children. One of those girls later attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. She now has two children of her own and is married to a West Pointer serving with 82nd Airborne Division. My own 18-year-old son by the same Vietnamese lady is Pfc. Alex Ngoc Collins, USMC, a member of B Company, 1st Bn, 7th Marines at 29 Palms, CA. He is proud to be a Marine. On behalf of my family, I would like to thank all of you who served in the Marine Security Guard detachment at the American Embassy in Saigon. When I visit the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial in Washington, which is often, I always a say a prayer in memory of Corporals McMahon and Judge. Semper Fidelis. Peter Collins

Comments: Great Job, Marines: I was stationed with Hqtrs Ninth Marines Regiment. I was on watch in the Communication Center when the message arrived to kick off the Evacuation of Vietnam. I can still recall making the call to the CO Ninth Marines, Col. Livingston to inform him of the Flash message. My old friend Harry Schlie and myself were on standby to go on the operation if the original members could not be found as it was around 0100 in the morning when the word went out to saddle up. Keep up the Great Work! Semper Fidelis

Comments: Hello Shipmates, I was the Navigator on board the USS OKINAWA (LPH-3) during "Eagle Pull & Frequent Wind". During the evacuation I kept the Okinawa as close to Vung Tau as safe navigation would allow. This was a day for me that was full of mixed emotions...as I reflected on men for whom I was their CACO Officer. While I was very busy with my job the last days in the Nam closed the book on over 3 sea tours in support of the Viet Nam war. I had been there in 1969-1970 on the USS VALLEY FORGE (LPH-11) and then in 1971-1972 on board the USS GUADALUPE (AO-32) where we were involved in "Market Time." I have many memories of the first day of the evacuation when I wondered to myself if the whole war was at all worth it. I reflected back on the pilots and sailors whom I had buried as a result of their deaths in NAM and otherwise. I remember clearly the shock and horror on the faces of their loved ones when I had to knock on their doors in and around Shreveport , LA where I was stationed on shore duty to inform them that their son, bother Father etc., was either KIA or MIA. I could never answer their questions of "Why, What was the war all about? etc." As I looked down from the bridge of the ship to the flight deck and watched the evacuees arriving, my eyes fixed particularly long and hard at a very old Vietnam woman (must have been 75-85 years old) who was dazed and frightenend as she slowly shuffled off an H-63 helo and dissappeared down a ship's ladder. I said to myself if that old woman had the courage to leave her hometown and her country because she feared the life she would have to live there, as short as hers might be, under VC rule. It helped to somehow sort the NAM war all out...but it wasn't until the collapse of the wall in Germany and the final downfall of Communism did I realize that "Their lives were not given in vain." I took what it took. Thanks for giving me a place to sound off. Cdr James J. Forrestal, USN RET "If you haven't been in "Eagle Pull or Frequent Wind", you ain't shit!"
