I was with Air America when Saigon fell. Remember seeing a few Marines that I was a 2lt with. We all felt better when we saw the big gray fleet and of course our U.S. Marines on their last mission in that part of the world. A tear jerker day for more reasons than one. Sincerely, Joe Weiss

I was on board the USS Vancouver (LPD-2) during the evacuation of Saigon. As the onduty Radioman Petty Officer I pulled the flash message that the Capital had fallen and rushed the message out to the bridge. The entire bridge watch was on the starboard side watching what looked in the sunrise like hundreds of helicopters lifting off from the city to head our direction. Even more memorable for me, however, was later in the morning witnessing hundreds of marines lined up shoulder to shoulder from our "well deck" all the way up to and across our flight deck, then down an accommodation ladder as they passed "cargo" that came out to us in our "mike boats." They did this as their 4 hour watch duty--then they continued for another 4 hours, and longer, voluntarily. Their cargo was babies. I have no idea how many, but it had to be thousands. I stood and watched them work like some surreal fire brigade dedicated to putting out even just a little part of the fire of fear and hate that surrounded that day by carefully, but quickly, passing babies one after another. As a sailor, I was part and parcel to the usual snide comments exchanged between squids and jarheads, but I am still touched when I remember their tears as they worked to save the children of a fallen nation. I salute all of the men and women of the United States Marine Corps who bring pride and honor to our nation.

Served proudly as the PLT CMRD of 3rdplt/G/2/4/3rdMarDiv. Evacuated Phnom Phen several weeks earlier. A little "dicey". Started the Saigon thing a whole lot later than we could have because of political reasons. We were landed in the wrong LZ and had to adjust ending up in the DAO Annex which was our objective. As the perimeter was reduced we were ordered back to the DAO where we were extracted.

as someone very interested in american history i found your site very interesting. hindsite is a very good thing but the question must be asked would vietnam be worse off it was left alone as a civil war.
i spoke to many us air force vietnam veterans in england during the war, and was suprised to hear hostile comments against politicians when i consider the united states is the worlds greatest country because of democracy, and the rule of the elected. having said that, soldiers or marines often have to make up for failing foreign policies. and in vietnam there does not appear to have been a clear strategy.i remember an american officer in vietnam saying if the enemy sends nine more soldiers we send ten. it did not occur to him that ment the enemy had the initiative. i whatever your view , marines, went to war in vietnam to do their duty as they saw it and courage and sacrifice deserves to be rememberd.well done.

I am a south east asia lover. Read a lot about this war, and taking advantage of the hindsight, I want to say that Vietnam war was fare and had to be fought. Many were against the war at the time and are at ease arguing that it had not to be fought.Eventually they manged to made combatant's efford vane hindering the military actions. My opinion is different. . . my opinion is that all those who were against the war should consider the unspeakable suffering inflicted on the Vietnamese people by the NVA and VC after "liberation", prooved, if not evident enough, by the relentless flow of boat people who littered the sea for around 15 years after the end of the war, and understand that the moral commitment of the USA has been highly respectable. It has been prooved by the facts after the war, in one word DICTATORSHIP.
My highest respect to the servicemen who died there to defend the ideal of freedom, and to those who came back and had to face hostile attitude from their own people.

I was doing the final intelligence estimates while I was with 1st Bn 9th Mar just prior to the evac of Saigon. We had a room with wall-wall maps of south VN and we were tracking the NVA & VC movements towards Saigon. We had the date estimated exactly and the the time was within a couple hours, and we even figured out exactly WHO was going to lead their procession into Saigon. This was several weeks PRIOR to the actual evac.
When the time came to proceed to Saigon, I stayed in Okinawa at the Far-Eastern Rifle Matches. CG-3rdMarDiv didn't want his #1 rifle team broken up.
We monitored the entire operation and it was depressing to see.
Honestly, I probablt could have gone with the rest of the batallion, but I had no desire to return to VN by then.

I was a Marine Security Guard at the Saigon Embassy 67-68 during the TET Offensive. I had for 34 years been lost to those other Marines. The Fall of Saigon Marines have done a great job remembering and keeping all aware.
I was recently located by Mike Bertini and attended a MSG/Saigon reunion in DC. I can't explain in an effective manner the jarring impact it has had on my life. After so many years you begin to wonder if your memory is accurate. After this reunion I am finding these web sites and am beginning to look for Marines I served with outside of DaNang in 69-70. I do want to remember now and have once again found my friends, heros and beloved Corps.
Thank you for helping me to realize we were not forgotten.

I was born in Siagon in 1968 , my father and mother were both Americans. My mother has told me many times about a veitnamese women who took care of us children. Her name was Che-ba. When my family was evacuated in 1975, my parents fought to take her with us. Unfortunately they were unsuccessfull. My family and I know that she would most likely have been targeted as an American sympathizer and possibly jailed or executed. All I know of her is that she had as many as 8-10 children. She lived in our home, which once belonged to a french gentleman. I know its a long shot, but if anyone has any information on her please contact me. My parents believe that she was truly a hero.

I was with A Co. 3rd Shore Party Bn. I deployed with a combined force fron Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Staion Hawaii. We flew from Hickam Air Force Base to Guam , refueled, and landed at Kadena Air Force on Okinawa. When we got there we were sent to Camp Hanson, Okinawa and remained there for 16 days as the back fill for the Okinawan Marines that were aboard the ships and actually made the lifts of American civilians. We returned to Hawaii with the evacuee's and docked in Pearl Harbor to the music of the Navy Band. I was ready to go to war if necessary, but,DAMN glad I didn't! The flight over was on a commercial airliner ( Flying Tigers) If any of my P's from Shore Party see this I would enjoy hearing from them. 1973 to 1976

What a great site!!! Wish I had found it sooner.

I was on MSG Duty in Asunsion, Paraguay during the fall of Saigon and served in Vietnam with the First MAW. I recall sitting in the embassy communications room with the embassy Comm. O. listening to reports about the evacuation. I had a lot of mixed emotions - sad that the war was ending this way; concern about the welfare of the MSG's; and proud that the task was being carried out by elements of the First MAW.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Marine Corps but after you guys came in and pulled us out you became my "knights in shining armor" and I will defend you to my dying breath and beyond! I came out with only the clothes on my back and my calico Manx cat who the guys in the carpentry shop onboard the USS Mount Vernon took pity on and provided a "safe haven." It has been 27 years since that fateful (and sad) day and I would just like to finally say "thank you" to each and every one of you for putting your own lives in jeopardy to save ours! You know, I'm proud to be an American. Here, at least I know I'm free. I'll NEVER forget the men who died and gave that right to me. I'll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today. There ain't no doubt I love this land. GOD BLESS THE USA!

To those who haven't done so yet, get involved in your local veterans groups and remind others that in 1975, Vietnam was still a very dangerous place, and we all served with honor. i have been born during the time that this event happen. it wasn't a good one for my family and i know even though i was barely 3 years old after the war finish. but i was born in cambodia and we have to immigrated to america. my family got split up and lost contact with most of my relatives. i didn't even get to see my uncle when i was born and now he past away already. anyways, i don't know the true history of this event and i don't know who's fault it is but i have read lots of autobiography of people who went through this when they were young and i know it was a very bad thing. i just want to tell the other people that i went trhrough the same thing.

I have always been told that he was seen on one of the last choppers out. My parents were divorced so I didn't know as much about him that I should have. Does anyone out there remember him or his assignment? Just trying to get some info to pass on to my children.

so the government still doesn't recognize the work we put in ? we deserve a meritorious mast or campain ribbon at the least. now we didn't lose that war. or conflict what ever you want to call it. we were there to support the south and when we seen they didn't want to defend them selves any more .why support an effort when there is nothing to support.? any wa they were saying yankee go home , so when we were leaving they said hey " can we go with you? thats where my service to flight squadron 115 and various other duties were carried out. i ran a generator that powered a machine that made napalm . weeks before the evac, also ran an m-59 crane to put war heads into the 500 pound bombs.worked aourd the clock for days hooking up 400 hertz converters for trck 75 radios and flood light's for night maintaince on the jets. and when we got the vietnamese people to subic i helped to unload these these people and set up a tent city wired mess units for them and hot shower units running for them.i was handy with gasoline engines. and alot of shower units were down. so i helped in my little way and not even a mention of thanks by our government.that action was and still is or should be considered for campain status.i had marines write to me from one way five (115) and tell me that they remmember me from mau camp to the hancock.working like a devil dog.no sleep.only in the hanger bay.til some one needed some thing. is there a class action being under taken by any one to assure that all involved will be part of campain history?i want my ribbon and we didn't lose a war that our support effort was being undermined. flight lines with f-4's were being captured and millions of dollars in ammo too. te south veitnamese lost the will to fight. not us!

She was only 2 years old at the time, and of course she doesn't remember a thing, but her Mom and Dad tell here a lot of stories about Vietnam, and the Fall of Saigon. Since many young people are iggnorant to exactly what happened in Saigon would you please put up a section that gives a short overview as to the entire mission? I really think it would allow young adults who weren't around during the War understand more of what happened. It's just an idea and I really do like the website!

If anyone knew my father, PLEASE contact me. He arrived in Saigon three days before it fell, and he was put in charge of the line of people hoping to be evacuated. He was in Operation Frequent Wind HMH 463, and left on the USS Blue Ridge. From 1970-71, he was in Fox Co. 1,3. From 71-72, he was in Golf Co. 2,5. In 72, he was also a 3rd Force Recon. He's about 5'11", Caucasian, brown hair, blue eyes, and glasses. I believe Major Lanham was his commanding officer and he remembers the name Lt. DeLong. He was wounded three times. He now lives in Marshall, N.C., and we would both welcome any information you have. Thank you very much!

Guys,

I was the Special Forces Medic (RVN '73 - '75) running the medical evacuation of civilians at the DAO gymnasium complex (outside DOA compund). I remember when Cpl McMahon and LCpl Judge got rocketed. They were at a checkpoint at the perimiter of the DAO compound. I tried to convince their CO to send them over to us (about a 1/4 mile away, even though they were DOA), but I guess it was one of those interservice things.

As the day fell apart I wanted to set up a mission to get their remains from Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Saigon, but was ordered not to.

Just wanted to let you all know I appreciated you guys covering my ass those last few hours.

My Uncle was killed in Vietnam, I never had a chance to meet him. His name was Clyde Lahr.
I had met my dad's cousin, Jim Lahr, he too fought in the war. He survived it but was hurt,
paralyzed from waist down. I remember the pain on his face as he told me stories when I was
a child. I often wondered how people could be so cruel and treat other Americans so badly.
They fought for freedom, they were very brave and even though I am only 28 years old, I'm
proud of all the Vietnam Veterans who gave their all, the ones who lived, and the ones who
died. Jim has passed away about 5 years now, but I still remember the times we visited him
and he told me of the horrors that went on over there and how they weren't appreciated. I
truly hope that someday, all the Veterans will get recognition for their bravery. I pray that
someday the MIA/POW, will be able to come home too.

I was just 3 years old at the end of the Vietnam War, but I have always found it very fascinating. I commend the men and women who fought and lost their lives for this war.

What an experience!!!! We are called to battle for our country and our leaders seemed to not want to win. That was very frustrating for me. As time passed, it just got worse. I seemed to be able to stay out of the worst of the mess. I was in HMR-263, aboard the Boxer for the first Dominican uprise (summer of '61). Then detached to the Valley Forge when converted from a CVA to a LPH. Then detached to Gitmo detachment flying the fence in the last two of the HRS-3's. Returned months later to New RIver to find I had been transfered into HMR-162, scheduled to go to the Far East in the Summer of '62. We spent one night in Okinawa then flown to Udorn, Thailand. A few weeks later, Pres. Kennedy pulled the Marines out of Thailand if the Russians would leave Laos. (We left several aircraft and several men from the squadron we relieved. They got 6 mo. temp. discharges and continued to fly into Laos as civilians (Air America, Inc. -- owned by the CIA). We went aboard the Valley Forge in the Gulf of Siam (lost one aircraft, engine failure), on to Hong Kong then to Subic Bay. Several landings during that time, including the Cuba Missile Crisis. Then we went to Danang, SVN to relieve a squadron there. Stayed there 6 mo. Transfered to HMM-362 as an instructor, until completing my military obligation, and not wanting to go back to Vietnam, was hired by Air America, Inc. My new bride was hired also as the first school teacher for the Air America, Inc. dependent children. We departed the US the same afternoon we got married. Many fellow marines at the wedding, Al Friesenda, Lenny Demko, Jim Usher, and others. Went to Tiapai, then to Udorn, Thailand flying unarmed, unmarked, and no ID, UH34-D's in Laos. Did that for two years, tried to transfer into fixed wing, but turned down.(was told I was making to much money for them in helicopters). Took home leave and joined a small helicopter company at Lake City, Florida. Sprayed powerline and pipeline rights-of-way for sixteen years. THen became the FBO at Castroville, Texas. Fought city officials for twenty years as they tried to destroy my business. Ended up the city of Castroville filed a lawsuit against me and my company to break a long term lease they drew up in 1979. (after I had paid them hundreds of thousands of dollars). We counter sued, and won about ten cents on the dollar. What a ride!!!!! Been fun, but would not want to do it again.... Lou

Boy - does this page ever bring back memories ! I was a radio tech (mos 2841) in a communication platoon in Hotel Battery 3/12 onboard the USS Vancouver LSD-28 for both operations Eagle Pull and Frequent Winds. We evac'd a lot of refugees and even treated some wounded on our ship. A chopper load of ARVN land on our ship unexpectedly and we helped them out. The pilot gave me his map of RVN as a souvenir. I will never forget the guys I served with and the faces of those refugees fleeing communism. Semper Fi from a gray haired old Sgt.

Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines, all of you are burned into our hearts and
souls and We love you dearly. THANK YOU for the all sacrifices you've made for
this country. For the physical and mental anguish you've been through...For
the sense of loneliness and loss you must have felt being separated from the
people you loved dearly...For the COURAGE you displayed in fighting for our
country and caring for our wounded...For being there for you fellow comrades
when they needed you.

We are sorry for the mental and physical baggage you had to bring home from the
war... For the men who died in your arms...For the babies you didn't see
being born or taking their first steps. For the wives, girlfriends, husband
and boyfriends that couldn't wait for your return...For the terrifying nights
you wondered if you would ever make it home alive...For all the tears in..
secret.. we could not wipe away or the hugs to say we care...For the
disrespect shown by some your fellow Americans...For a government that
wouldn't let you win the war....For the politics that kept you there too
long...For the WELCOME HOME some of you never received...For the neglect
shown you since your return.

Let us take this time to SALUTE all of you for "Courage Above and Beyond the
Call of Duty". We are humbled to be a part of your lives and very honored to
listen to what your heart has to say to all of us. From you.. lessons can be
learned..and the definition of Honor and Respect can be passed onto our
children and all of mankind!! We will make sure your REMEMBERED and those of
your fellow Veterans who's bodies lay cold in the ground...For they are only
forgotten if not remembered. "WE WILL REMEMBER"

Love & Respect

I was in Hawaii with 1st Bn 3rd Marines in April 75.
One morning formation the battalion commander showed up
and told us all to pack our trash. In the next sleepless
48 hours we took on hundreds of Marimes as we filled out our
companies, packed our gear and added artillary. A few men
returned from UA because they didn't want to be left behind. We did not know where we were going but we recieved a continious stream of inteligence from in and around
Ton Son Nhut. The news was not good. We all got on planes without knowing where we would land. I was on a C141 guarding ammunition and radio gear, I remember I also had a briefcase handcuffed to my arm to deliver to my company commaner who had gone ahead of me. We landed in Okanawa and trained while our country decided what to do with us . Some time after Siagon fell we boarded ship to cruise home via Japan. Most of the time I was on a plane or a ship or training and I never really knew what was going on. I have never lost the empty feeling that came over me when I found out it was all over.

Here's to those brave men who answered the call with honor, dedication, pride, loyalty, willing to pay the ultimate price if necessary, and were not cowards like Clinton, who should be ashamed to even call himself an American yet alone the President of this great country.

I remember seeing the evacuation on the news when I was a boy (I was born in 65). I remember my uncle coming back from Viet Nam (he was a Captain 5th Marines). I remember his younger brothers with their shaved heads visiting my mom (they were drafted; Army didnt have to go because of the Sullivan laws) ...
I joined the Navy in 84. I was a Corpsman. Served at Beufort NAVHOSP and the Parris Island Branch Clinic.
Also served with 4th Marines in the reserves...
looking to write a book about those Men who died over in Beirut. Any feedback (regardless of what your involvement may or may not be in that sad tragic episode) will be appreciated. This has been a mission of mine for quite some time. HELP!

One other note. On one of the nights we had a chopper go down. It was a Marine Helicopter and the Pilot and the Co-pilot could not get out. There were two Cpls on board and they broke their legs. They were in bad shape. I was one of the Corpman who took care of them. Does anyone know about this and what ever happened to these guys. Thanks. Bill Shipley. USS Hancock. Semper Fi.

I am a Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Duluth (LPD 6) during operation Frequant Wind. I also had what I consider to be the Good Fortune to work in the Mobile Support team with some dam good people. Even if they wore green! I will always remember with great pride those Marines with whom I had the privilage to serve with. They willingly took a "very" young Sailor, and taught him what he needed to know to get the job done. This whole Country owe's you guy's a great amount of gratitude, And I for one want you to know That You Are Not Forgotten! I was in the area and I will alway's remember what went down. It wasn't just Saigon.

Thank you for your wonderful site, Michel courdié

I encourage everyone visiting this site to read MGySgt Valdez's (the last Saigon Marine to leave)speech in the 25th memorial section of this site. This is the best speech about what its like to be a Vietnam "survivor" that I have read and touched all of us during the memorial. Thanks again Top, for bringing us home.

I was an AF SSgt stationed assigned to the 432nd Reconnaissance Technical Squadron, Udorn RTAFB, Thailand from February - August 1975. Our mission was to view drone aircraft reconnaissance film of South Vietnam on a daily basis. I had the "distinct" duty to watch, albeit from afar, the NVA move south from the DMZ to the outskirts of Saigon (Bien Hoa) and enter the city on that fateful day.
My first hand "snapshot" of this event will always be with me and I salute you.

Have a buddy I have lost touch with. His name is Mike McCormick. He retired in the Late 80's from MCAS El Toro CA as a MSgt Avionics type. He was a retread Grunt that was at the consulate in Danang when it all fell apart. He is mentioned in the Fall volume of the MC Historical Vietnam series. Anyway the last time I heard he was in Phoenix (Maybe Tucson) AZ. Has anyone heard from him? Would appreciate a line if you have.
